PROMOTING READING TO THE LATINO YOUTH IN LYNWOOD, CA
Sept. 16, 2005 - Velázquez Press and Librería Martínez partnered to bring a successful launch of AskVelázquez and presentation aimed to create interest in children and families about reading. The event took place during the September 15th Fiestas Patrias of Plaza Mexico in Lynwood, Calif. The program started with LEO interviewing Lynwood School Board Member, José L. Solache, and 2005 MacArthur Fellowship Award winner: Reuben Martínez, founder of Librería Martínez,. Children and parents participated in grammar contests, word searches, and educational games. The program’s big finale was a lion piñata containing educational resource prizes and candy. Ask Velázquez is promoting literacy and education among Latino youth.
