Clark County School District Approves Velazquez Glossaries for ESL Qualified Material

Los Angeles, California (August 26, 2010) – Clark County School District , the 5th largest school district in the United States, approved Velázquez Spanish and English Glossaries as the district's ESL Qualified Material.

The Velazquez Spanish and English Glossaries, which includes content subjects in math, science, and social studies, are specially designed to help ESL students to learn academic vocabulary in the classroom and for use as accommodation on Nevada's CRT and HSPE. The glossaries contain subject specific terms which students cannot find in regular Spanish and English dictionaries.

Most Spanish and English dictionaries are designed for English students studying Spanish. These traditional dictionaries often collect British English corpus and later convert the British spelling into American English. Because they use European Spanish translations, these dictionaries often confuse American Spanish speaking students, who are mostly from Latin American. For example, in these traditional Spanish dictionaries, the word "pants" is translated into "underwear" in Spanish, and the word cacahuate (peanut), is missing.
